Multidisciplinary didactic strategy for the development of reading comprehension in upper basic education students of the Rocafuerte Educational Unit

ABSTRACT
This research addresses the problem of insufficient reading comprehension among upper elementary students at the Rocafuerte Educational Unit, located in the Rocafuerte canton of the Manabí province. Its general objective was to design a multidisciplinary teaching strategy for these students. The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The sample was selected using purposive probability sampling, based on the researcher's criteria, and consisted of 30 eighth-grade students from section "A" at the aforementioned institution, enrolled in the Language and Literature class. The research utilized both theoretical and empirical methods. A 10-question interview was administered to 8 teachers working in the upper elementary level, a 10-question survey was given to 30 students, and a participatory observation guide was used in the eighth-grade classroom. The main results obtained demonstrated the students' low reading comprehension and the difficulties this causes in their learning and academic performance. The designed strategy proposes a series of activities to be carried out with the students to improve their reading comprehension and learning.
