Neuro-optical intraocular lens calculation as an innovation in Higher Medical Education

Cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in contemporary healthcare systems and represents an ongoing challenge for the training and continuous updating of visual health professionals. The success of this intervention largely depends on accurate intraocular lens (IOL) calculation, traditionally based on biometric parameters and standardized optical formulas. However, postoperative visual experience is also conditioned by neuroperceptual processes, cortical adaptation, and binocular integration, which are often underrepresented in conventional medical training. This article proposes a neuro-optical approach to IOL calculation, integrating ocular biometry, visual neuroscience, and medical education as a relevant innovation for Higher Education and Health Education. Using an analytical review and theoretical-practical reflection methodology, the implications of this approach for optimizing functional vision, patient satisfaction, and quality of clinical practice are examined. Its potential incorporation as a transversal training component in undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education programs in ophthalmology and optometry is also discussed. It is concluded that articulating biomedical science, neuroscience, and pedagogy promotes more personalized, ethical, and quality-of-life-centered patient care.
