Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Ascaris suum in pigs
slaughtered at the Santo Domingo Municipal Slaughterhouse, Ecuador, from 2017 to 2023, given its importance in public health and pig production. Data from the total number of slaughtered animals and infected pigs were analyzed, with infection identified through the confiscation of livers with lesions compatible with parasitosis and the presence of adult specimens in the intestines. During the six years analyzed, 120,988 pigs were slaughtered, of which 10,222 were infected, resulting in an overall
prevalence of 8.74%. The results showed significant differences in prevalence over time, with a decreasing trend. Despite this reduction, A. suum infection remains a
challenge in production units, highlighting the need to strengthen sanitary education programs and biosecurity measures to reduce the parasite’s prevalence and mitigate
its impact on public health and the pig industry.
