Krukenberg tumor: a narrative review

Abstract

Krukenberg tumor is an ovarian metastatic neoplasm, mainly derived from primary gastrointestinal tumors, characterized by mucin-rich signet ring cells. Its diagnosis, usually in advanced stages, is complicated by the initial asymptomatic nature. This work reviews the current evidence on its clinical importance, diagnosis and therapeutic strategies, by searching for information in electronic databases: PubMed, SciELO and Elsevier; 35 studies were analyzed in English and Spanish, published in the period 2019-2024. The assessment of CA-125 provides benefits in the early detection of ovarian metastasis and influences patient follow-up. The disease has an unfavorable prognosis and survival limited to 12-24 months; Its therapeutic management is not standardized, however, therapeutic strategies that include: oncological surgery associated with chemotherapy and immunotherapy, palliative care and pain therapy are part of the fundamental pillars for patient management.
