Abstract

Being a caregiver for a visually impaired patient involves physical, psychological, and economic burdens. This work demands constant dedication and transforms the caregiver’s family and social dynamics. This study aimed to explore the emotional conditions of caregivers of people with visual impairments. Thirteen studies published between 2001 and 2023 in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, were included, using descriptors such as visual impairment, caregivers, stress, anxiety, and depression. Observational studies that assessed psychological variables in caregivers of visually impaired patients using validated instruments were included. Methodological quality was assessed using the JBI and PEDro criteria. The results highlight moderate-to-high levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and caregiver burden, with a greater risk associated with the severity of the visual impairment. The caregiver role was familial, with women being more prevalent. Regarding the caregiver-patient relationship, spouses experienced a greater emotional burden. Protective factors included emotional, social, and economic support. The need to integrate emotional and financial support programs is highlighted in order to reduce the burden associated with the caregiver role, strengthen their well-being, and ensure higher quality care for people with visual disabilities.
