Development strategies, in the Ibero-American business system, are based on enhancing the role of human knowledge in this endeavor; hence the present investigation shows a three-phase method to formulate knowledge strategies (exploration, dissemination and exploitation) oriented to the support of distinctive competences taking into account the relationship between the nature of both. On this basis, a framework model was proposed that identified the organizational distinctive competences, defined the knowledge positioning matrix and the identification of strategic gaps in support of these competencies, and an algorithm for the decision on knowledge strategies. A Technology Information and Management Center was used as a case study, a firm of professional services in management consulting with high social and business impact and the inclusion of academic training in the socio-economic development of society. The findings showed three predominant distinctive competences related to: skills in information technology, customer focus and solving problems that constituted gaps of knowledge to be strengthened, which allowed defining the relevant strategies. Thus, it was demonstrated that the coincidence between the particular approach of a knowledge strategy and the nature of the distinctive competence (s) constituted the methodological argument for the achievement of the obtained results.
