Abstract

Bamboo is a widely used material with multiple benefits. These include its high strength-to-weight ratio, its rapid growth rate compared to wood, its renewability, its biodegradability, and its ability to generate economic resources for local communities. These and other factors make bamboo a sustainable material. However, its implementation and diffusion face a number of challenges. These include deficiencies in the design codes of different countries that promotes the use, and in some cases, their non- existence. In some places, bamboo is considered a material for construction intended only for people with limited economic resources or as scaffolding. This paper presents a study of the design codes for bamboo structures over time at a global level and the situation in Ecuador through a review of relevant bibliography and official sources. The study found that the Ecuadorian code has certain deficiencies and must be updated.
