Problem-Based Learning: A methodology for developing meaningful learning in Mathematics

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is an active methodology focused on solving real-world problems. It involves identifying, analyzing, and proposing structured solutions under the guidance of teachers. Based on this perspective, a study was conducted at the Félix Granja Gamazo Educational Unit, located in the Simiatug parish, Guaranda canton, Bolívar province. This study was motivated by students' poor academic performance and lack of interest in mathematics. The main objective was to implement meaningful learning through a PBL approach in this subject. The study was based on inductive-deductive, analytical-synthetic methods, documentary analysis, and the use of correlational statistics. The sample consisted of 200 students and six teachers from the General Basic Education sublevel. A convenience sample was selected, consisting of three teachers and 60 seventh-grade students (parallels A and B). The results obtained through the application of a pretest and posttest demonstrated a significant improvement in the learning process, concluding that PBL favors the development of mathematical skills and promotes a more active and participatory attitude on the part of the students.
