La Atención Odontológica: un reto para el cuidado de niños con discapacidades

Abstract

One of the fundamental objectives of Cuban stomatological practice is comprehensive care for the population, for this the dentist, on the scientific basis of his knowledge, implements and implements the actions proposed by the National Comprehensive Stomatological Care Program, which contemplates care for the individual, family and community, through prioritized groups that are established by certain characteristics of the patients. Within these groups are patients with certain disabilities. The objective of this article is to know the general aspects to consider to provide an effective dental approach and treatment to children with disabilities in the dental office. A review of the updated available literature was carried out. The articles were identified through the automated search in the databases: PubMed, SciELO and Google Scholar, in the period from January to June 2024, 68 scientific texts were selected, written in Spanish and English, published between 2017 and 2024, of which: 59 were scientific journal articles, 6 master's and doctoral theses and three books. The systematic and critical review of the topic allows us to propose that the care of these patients constitutes a challenge for dentists, due to the knowledge they must have that allows them to correctly evaluate the patient by taking into account risk factors associated with their comorbidities.
