Factors associated with the mental health of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review

This research aimed to evaluate the factors that exert the greatest influence on the mental health of parents with children diagnosed with ASD. To this end, a systematic review of scientific articles on factors associated with the mental health of parents with children diagnosed with ASD was conducted, following the guidelines of the PRISMA declaration. Twenty articles were considered for analysis, found in the Science Direct, Scielo, and Scopus databases after undergoing the selection process. The results show that sociodemographic components of parents of children with ASD, specific elements of children diagnosed with ASD, intrinsic elements of parents, and elements exogenous to the parent-child relationship are associated with the mental health of parents and/or primary caregivers of children with ASD. It is concluded that the literature has focused largely on analyzing how specific elements of children diagnosed with ASD are associated with the mental health of their parents.
