Another Way to Scrutinize Cuba: Angulo Pérez and Martínez Coronel Dialogue Around the Concept of Community

The struggle between the urban and the rural persists. Over time, an asymmetry of representations has taken shape, influencing—whether deliberately or unconsciously—the very notion of Community. Some theorists believe the issue could be resolved by equating the laws and categories of both spheres, even if this entails blurring the particularities that distinguish them. Others remain attached to the nineteenth-century paradigm that assigns the urban a nearly “providential” role of conquest or colonization over the agrarian world. There are also those who, with a more balanced perspective, defend unity in diversity and recognize in rural spaces a dynamism and vitality that make them agents of social transformation. These perspectives are essential for the course “Community Studies,” as they enable a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural complexity of collective processes. Numerous texts, whether core or supplementary, engage with these debates and serve as testimonies to the social evolution of any country. In the Cuban context, particularly regarding the chronicles of its communities, there are indispensable works.
