Seroprevalence of bovine infectious rhinotracheitis in the province of Cotopaxi, Ecuador

Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) is a disease with worldwide distribution, causing infertility and abortion in cattle, and consequently great economic losses. Therefore, the objective of the research was to determine the prevalence of bovine infectious rhinotracheitis in the province of Cotopaxi, Ecuador. A total of 396 bovines of both sexes and different ages and breeds from the cantons of Latacunga, La Mana, Pangua, Pujilí, Salcedo, Saquisilí and Sigchos were sampled. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA-i) test was carried out to detect positive cases of the disease, analyzes developed in the laboratories of the Veterinary Clinic, Technical University of Cotopaxi. The statistical analysis included the ordering of the data in frequency tables, developing a descriptive analysis with the Microsoft Excel program and frequency measurement through prevalence. The R program was used to perform the χ² (Chi-square) test associated with the prevalence of the disease and the factors of sex, age, race. Antibodies to the virus that causes infectious bovine rhinotracheitis were detected in all the cantons belonging to the Province of Cotopaxi, with a general prevalence of 45.37%, being significantly higher in the Pangua canton with 72.2% and with values higher than the 50% in La Mana and Sigchos. Both males and females register high positivity to the disease, with high levels of prevalence in animals > 2 years of age, determining in the case of the breed that the Gyrolando and Criollo genotypes register the highest positivity with 73.3 and 65.3%, respectively. Also classified as high for the Holstein (36.6%) and Brown Swiss (42.8%) breeds.
