Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The manuscript is written in English and follows the official journal template.
  • The manuscript is original, has not been published before, and is not under review in another journal or conference.
  • All authors have approved the manuscript and agree to its submission. Their full metadata and ORCID iDs have been entered in the submission form.
  • All author information has been removed from the file to ensure double-blind review.
  • The abstract has 150 to 250 words, and there are 3 to 5 keywords.
  • References follow APA 7th edition, include DOIs when available, and every reference is cited in the text.
  • All figures are provided as separate high-resolution files (at least 300 dpi, or vector format for charts and diagrams) and are legible at the final size.
  • The manuscript includes the sections Funding, Author Contributions, Conflicts of Interest, Data Availability Statement and Declaration of Generative AI Use, completed even when the answer is "none".
  • The Supporting Agencies field has been completed in the submission form. If the research received no external funding, enter “None”.
  • If the study involves human participants or personal data, approval from an ethics committee is stated in the manuscript.
  • I accept that, if the article is published, it will be released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).
  • The manuscript does not exceed 10% similarity with other sources (excluding quotations and references) or 30% of content generated by artificial intelligence. I understand that manuscripts exceeding either limit are returned without review.

Author Guidelines

Editorial flow

Submitting to Informática y Sistemas follows the editorial flow below. The complete process, from submission to online publication, takes approximately 3 months at most.

Time budget: pre-screening 5 days + checks 3 + peer review 28 + decision and revisions 34 + production 15 + publication 5 = 90 days (3 months). The target assumes one revision round.

Step 1. Submission in OJS (your step)

Before you submit, confirm that your manuscript meets every item of the Submission Preparation Checklist on this page. You accept the checklist online during submission, and submissions that do not comply are returned. There is no separate checklist file to upload.

Prepare your manuscript

  • Write the manuscript in English using the official article template. The template contains all formatting rules for figures, tables, equations, references, and the required declaration sections.
  • Choose the manuscript type: Research article, Case study, or Review.
  • Recommended length: 8 to 16 pages, including references.
  • Prepare each figure as a separate file (TIFF, PNG, EPS, SVG, or vector PDF). Do not submit screenshots of tables or low-resolution images.
  • Remove everything that reveals identity from the manuscript: names, affiliations, emails, and acknowledgments.

Submit through OJS

  • Register on the platform and link your ORCID iD.
  • Upload the anonymized manuscript in Word format (.docx).
  • Upload the figures as separate files, each named with the same number used in the text (for example, Figure_1.tiff).
  • Optionally, upload supplementary material (datasets, code, or appendices) with a short description of each file.
  • Enter the full metadata of all authors in the submission form: name, affiliation, country, email, and ORCID.
  • In the Keywords field, enter the same keywords that appear in the manuscript, in English, one at a time, pressing Enter after each one. Do not separate them with commas or semicolons.
  • In the Languages field, enter English and press Enter.
  • Complete the Supporting Agencies field. If the research received no external funding, enter “None”.
  • Accept the submission checklist and the copyright notice.

Step 2. Editorial pre-screening (Editorial Board, up to 5 days)

The Editorial Board checks the scope, the use of the template, and the answers to the submission checklist. Submissions that do not comply are returned to the authors.

Step 3. Similarity and AI-content check (Editorial Board, up to 3 days)

Manuscripts are screened with Compilatio. Similarity must not exceed 10% (excluding quotations and references) and AI-generated content must not exceed 30%. Manuscripts over either limit are returned without review.

Step 4. Double-blind peer review (external reviewers, up to 28 days)

At least two external reviewers without conflicts of interest evaluate the manuscript without knowing who wrote it. A third reviewer is consulted when the first two disagree. Reviewers respond to the invitation within 7 days and submit the review within 21 days.

Step 5. Editorial decision (your step) (editor, decision in 4 days)

The editor decides within 4 days of receiving the reviews, with one of these outcomes:

  • Accept Submission: publishable as it is.
  • Revisions Required: minor changes, checked by the editor without a new review.
  • Resubmit for Review: major changes that need a new review round.
  • Resubmit Elsewhere: outside the scope of the journal.
  • Decline Submission: not publishable.

If revisions are requested, submit the revised manuscript within 15 calendar days together with the response-to-reviewers form. Reviewers then verify the changes and the editor makes the final decision within 15 days. There are up to two revision rounds.

Step 6. Production (your step) (editorial staff, up to 15 days)

Once accepted, upload the final version (.docx) with author information, affiliations, and author contributions. Review the galley proofs within 5 days.

Step 7. Publication (open access, up to 5 days)

The article is published online within 5 days after the proofs are approved, in open access under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, with a DOI (prefix 10.33936) registered with Crossref. Publication is continuous, in two issues per year.

There are no submission or publication fees. Full rules are in the Editorial and Ethics Policies, and current editorial times are on the Journal Statistics page. For questions, contact revista.iys@utm.edu.ec.
