Instructions for Obtaining an ORCID iD
Instructions for Obtaining an ORCID iD
As a researcher and academic, you constantly face the challenge of distinguishing your research activities from those of others with similar names. You need to connect your identity easily and uniquely to databases, teams, articles, media stories, citations, experiments, patents, and books.
Since you collaborate across multiple disciplines, institutions, and borders, you must interact with an increasing number of diverse research information systems. Entering data repeatedly can be time-consuming and often frustrating.
ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a 16-digit alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies an author’s scientific production over time. By providing a persistent digital identifier to each researcher, ORCID enables the correct and unequivocal attribution of their research activities referenced in various bibliographic databases or information systems, enhancing the visibility and impact of their publications. This identifier stays with the researcher throughout their career.
It is required by a growing number of funding agencies and scientific publishers. ORCID eliminates ambiguity in researchers' names and affiliations and improves the visibility and impact of research results.
The ORCID Registry is available free of charge to individuals, who can obtain an ORCID identifier, manage their activity records, and search for others in the registry. It contains non-confidential information, such as name, email, organization, and research activities.
To register, follow these steps:
-
Access the ORCID Registration Page:
- Go to https://orcid.org/register.
-
Register in the "For Researchers" Section:
- Enter your first and last names.
- Provide your institutional email address (you can add others, such as a personal email, in the personal information section).
- Create a password.
- Set the privacy level of your profile (public, limited, or private); public is recommended so others can see your work.

-
Complete Your Profile:
- Log in and configure your account, entering professional information into your record.
-
Link Your ORCID iD with Other Identifiers:

-
Use Your ORCID iD:
- Include your ORCID iD in your email signature, personal web pages, and the publications you submit to journals to increase the visibility of your work.
By following these steps, you will ensure that your research activities are correctly attributed, enhancing your visibility and the impact of your work across various platforms and databases.
