The Mexican initiative “Pueblos Magicos” (Magic Town) represents an alternative to Mexican development. Due to the tourist attraction of Pueblos mägicos, they are expected to generate economic income and increase their inhabitants’ quality of life. In the case of Nombre de Dios, Durango, Mexico, it was listed as a Magical Town in October 2018, due to its historical and cultural attributes, but it has not been able to structure a complementary and diversified tourist proposal that allows it to detonate its economy. This research aims to analyze the factors that hinder the enhancement of the different tourist attractions in the town and propose improvement strategies focused on social innovation and community development from local producers. The methodology consists of a qualitative study through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with producers of mezcal, preserves and handicrafts. The results show the disarticulation of an integrated plan of tourist offer, ignorance of the producers with respect to business management and links with government authorities. The research highlights the challenges that the magical town faces in terms of tourism competitiveness and community planning: understanding what the inhabitants and visitors need; measure the impact of business performance for the use of natural and cultural attractions; implement infrastructure, services, training and innovation to improve touristic products.
Keywords: entrepreneurial development, magical town, quality of life, tourism, arts & crafts.
