This research examines the role of gender in the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) of young university students. The study explores the differences between two groups (male and female) of students from six areas of knowledge at a Spanish public university, concerning the effect of gender on the dimensions of EO: autonomy, innovation, competitive aggressiveness and risk-taking. A quantitative research method was used, through a descriptive, inferential, and cross-sectional study, using a self-administered questionnaire. The sample was obtained by random-accidental sampling, between 2019, 2020 and 2021. The results showed that there are significant differences between men and women in the university context, regarding the perceptions of the autonomy, competitive aggressiveness, and risk-taking dimensions of the EO. These differences were because men were found to take more risks and to perceive themselves as more autonomous and competitive than women. On the other hand, the results did not confirm significant differences between the two groups according to the innovativeness dimension, although women were more innovative than men. The findings show evidence that young men’s EO is higher than that of young women. In conclusion, the need to foster autonomy, competitiveness, and risky behavior among female university students, as well as innovation among male university students, is confirmed.
