Abstract

The study examines the sustainability strategies implemented in households in Machala with the aim of analyzing practices applied by residents based on a contextual approach, a review of regional trends, and the administration of a survey; to this end, a quantitative, descriptive, and non-experimental design was employed, using structured questionnaires administered to 210 dwellings selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling and complemented by documentary review. The results show that the adoption of low-consumption technologies and saving habits is linked to income stability and neighborhood environments that facilitate cooperation, since households with formal employment or own-account businesses tend to incorporate efficient appliances, while those engaged in informal occupations sustain low-cost measures such as rationalizing lighting use and disconnecting devices. At the same time, waste management and access to basic services display territorial inequalities. It is concluded that domestic sustainability is stronger in private consumption than in the collective sphere, which underscores the need to articulate territorial policies and community arrangements that enhance urban and environmental resilience.
