A review is presented of the disseminated neoplasms described in bivalve molluscs, as well as the etiologies associated with them. An analysis and discussion are made about the arguments and reasons why it has not been possible to identify a single causal agent. These etiologies include anthropogenic contaminants, biotoxins, genetic factors and alterations such as transposons, infectious agents, particularly retroviruses, and the involvement of clonal lineages of transmissible and transformed cells. In addition, the main histopathological characteristics developed by the animals affected by this pathology are described and the main diagnostic techniques are exposed.
