Abstract

The availability of nutrients in the soil is of great importance, since deficiencies can significantly limit the yield of Cowpea. The objective of the research was to evaluate the effect of different fertilization levels on the agronomic performance of Cowpea INIAP-463. Five levels of N-P-K-S applied to Cowpea INIAP-463 were studied: (T1) 37-3.2-31-9; (T2) 73-6.5-61-17; (T3) 110-9.7-92-26; (T4) 147-13.9-123-35; (T5) 183-16.2-153-43 kg·ha-1 respectively. In addition, there was a control to which no fertilizer was applied. The treatments were established in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). The crop was established at a distance of 1 m between rows and 0.5 m between plants with two plants per site. Vegetative variables were measured as plant height, stem diameter and guide length; root, stem and leaf dry biomass; and yield (kg·ha-1), as well as NPKS agronomic efficiency. Vegetative variables were not significantly affected (P>0.05) by the fertilization treatments tested. Plant dry biomass (root, stem and leaves) were statistically influenced (P<0.05) by fertilization doses, where treatments T1 and T2 achieved the highest averages. Yield was significantly (P<0.05) affected by fertilization, where T1 achieved the highest grain yield (2,702.9 kg·ha-1) with respect to the other treatments. On the other hand, the lower fertilization dose increased agronomic efficiency. The results found allow concluding that the production of Cowpea INIAP-463 is linked to the amount of nutrients added, being 37(N)-3.2(P)-31(K)-9(S) kg·ha-1 the one that causes the highest yields.
