Abstract

The Pacific oyster, Magallana gigas, has been commercially cultivated on the Ecuadorian coast since 2014, but little is known about its cultivation in the various suitable environments in the province of Manabí. This study evaluates the growth and survival of the species at different stocking densities during the early stages of cultivation, using a suspended longline system. The study was conducted at the San Mateo fishing pier, Manta Municipality, Ecuador, between September and December 2023. Oysters were stocked at three densities: 100 (DOMIN), 200 (DOMED), and 300 (DOMAX), with three replicates. They were placed in PE containers with a diameter of 26 cm and a height of 9 cm, with 2 mm² pores, randomly arranged in three-tier Chinese lanterns, 40 cm in diameter. The temperature, salinity, pH, and turbidity (Secchi) of the water in the cultivation area were recorded weekly. The initial dorso-ventral length (DVL) was 0.86±0.24 cm and the weight 0.23±0.22 g. The temperature ranged from 28.9°C to 27.3°C; the salinity from 34 to 35 ppm; the pH from 7.6 to 7.83; and the Secchi depth from 1.7 to 2.1 m. After 63 days of culture, the average DVL and total weights were 2.13±0.89 cm and 1.33±1.29 g (DOMIN), 1.81±0.79 cm and 0.95±0.94 g (DOMED), and 1.73±0.73 cm and 0.82±0.83 g (DOMAX), with only the DOMIN values differing from the other two densities. The observed survival rates were 75% (DOMIN), 69% (DOMED), and 65% (DOMAX), with no significant difference among densities. The rigid trays were externally colonized by encrusting communities, but the oysters inside remained clean. It is recommended that M. gigas be cultured at a density of 100 oysters per 26 cm diameter container to obtain the highest growth rate.
