Abstract

The tourism sector depends to a large extent on the natural environment, the close relationship between these components makes tourism activity, due to its magnitude and projection, becomes a growing threat to the environment. In this sense, science plays an important role in the search for better practices and solutions to develop tourism that contributes to the care and protection of the environment. Therefore, investigating how it has evolved from the analysis of the literature related to environmental sustainability and tourism is a relevant issue. The objective of this study was to analyze the international scientific production found in the Sciencedirect database (Scopus) related to tourism and environmental sustainability in the period 2007 to year 2017. Through bibliometric indicators and with the use of the software: Endnote 7, Bibexcel, Excel, Pajek and VOSviewer the most relevant information and the main trends in this area were represented and mapped. The main results showed that the year with the highest productivity was 2017. The main lines of research are related to the need to manage sustainable tourist destinations and the behavior of tourists in the destinations. Finally, literature has considerable potential and a gradual growth of works on this subject is expected in recent years.
