Abstract

This research evaluates the impact of an immersive augmented reality (AR) educational game, developed using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools and programmed on the Delightex Edu platform. It focuses on the motivation, technological perception, and academic performance in Social Studies among fourth-grade students of Basic General Education (BGE) from four rural schools in the Riobamba canton, Ecuador. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test measurements in a sample of 70 students and 22 teachers. The student instrument comprised 25 Likert-scale items (six dimensions) and 10 multiple-choice questions, while the teacher instrument included 41 Likert-scale items (eight dimensions). Both instruments achieved high overall internal consistency (α = 0.941 and α = 0.991, respectively). The results revealed statistically significant increases (p < 0.001) across all evaluated dimensions after the intervention, with large effect sizes (Cohen’s d ranging from 1.15 to 2.54). Furthermore, the overall knowledge score increased from 7.64 to 9.36 out of 10 (d = 1.09). It is concluded that the integration of immersive educational games with AR and generative AI constitutes an effective pedagogical strategy for improving both motivation and the learning of curricular content in rural educational contexts.
